Banging on About Brunch at Brooklyn's Elberta

Banging on About Brunch at Brooklyn’s Elberta

Ok, I lied. Just a bit. Prior to brunching over at Parish Hall, I had indulged in brunch elsewhere; the incident escaped me because I didn’t eat there on a Sunday. Anyhow, as I now gleefully recall, one of my first dining experiences in edgy Brooklyn, was at the industrial-inspired dive of Elberta in the heart of Prospect Heights.

Light, fresh, seasonal. Good.

Light, fresh, seasonal. Good.

Wandering down Flatbush Avenue late one morning I was both starving and tired of green juices loaded with kale, spinach and celery (they’re everywhere in this city), I came across Elberta, which looked like it had just what I wanted: Eggs? Check! Beef? Check? Vegetables? Why yes, indeed. Oh, and there were some fancy-pants cocktails that sounded far too splendid to pass up.

Homemade Peach Whiskey Sorbet with  Champagne? Well, that’s a no-brainer.

Yes, it's as good as it looks. No, I don't think I'll share.

Yes, it’s as good as it looks. No, I don’t think I’ll share.

Self-described as a “New American restaurant” that dishes up affordable seasonal dishes “inspired by the Prohibition era,” the food at Elberta is idiosyncratic and highly enjoyable. The staff were extremely forthcoming when it came to helping me out with intolerant-friendly options, and kitchen was flexible in modifying certain items when necessary. I was hankering for some greens along with a nice piece of meat, so I went for the Berta Burger (sans cheese) and a butter lettuce salad on the side. I could probably bang on forever about how much I enjoyed my meal, but I’ll spare you the sloppy details and simplify my experience as such: my burger was juicy and rich with flavour. I adored the lightly seasoned fries, and the salad was the perfect supplement to an already pretty solid meal.

In other words: It was great. I’ll be back.
